A Bloke Don't Need Much...

"A bloke don't need much when he has this." This was told to me by a man with tears in his eyes and a wan smile on his face. I had just arrived at the Wild Pacific Trailhead and was trying to get my own breath back as I watched the sun just trying to rise over the Broken Group Islands of Pacific Rim National Park.

I had noticed this 'bloke' standing on the steps of the Amphitrite Lighthouse as I approached. He was taking a picture with his phone and approached me as I set up my tripod. He was alone. I was alone. We were the only two in the area. We talked quite a bit as the sun rose and it was a great way to begin my visit to this beautiful area.

I came away with an even deeper appreciation of the beauty that surrounded me. The tears in this mans eyes were partially because of the overwhelming energy of the place and partially because his wife had unexpectedly left him a couple months ago and he was experiencing some kind of emotion for her missing this. He was told by a friend, and was now a firm believer, that a large portion of the money you have should be spent on experiences rather than things. He said he packed a bag and left his 'shotty' little town in the UK and was going to soak up as much of Vancouver Island as he could in 6 days. We discussed how so many people are so focused on succeeding in life and acquiring 'things' that they miss all that is truly beautiful and important in life. This was obviously a man on the mend but he was in a good place to do it. He took a deep breath, commented on the view again and slowly walked toward the parking lot. I truly hope that this gentleman can brush off some of the darkness that he is carrying and that he can return to his 'shotty' little town in the UK and be able to find the beauty that is there as well. It is up to us to find the beauty around us. We just have to look a little harder or in different places sometimes.
